Movable Kitchen Islands - Great In Older Homes

Movable kitchen islands are particularly useful in older homes where floor plans or kitchen designs do not easily lend themselves to contemporary lifestyles or in kitchens in modern homes that have large or open-space designs.

A movable kitchen island can be moved as needed to provide additional work and storage space for cooking, then moved again to convert the kitchen into a multiple-use area between meals.

Smaller kitchen islands with wheels can also be moved into other rooms or outside on the deck or patio to cut and serve meats, cheeses, vegetables, and other party foods as well as to serve beverages, wine, or beer.

Some islands have small refrigerators and most have shelves, drawers, bins and cabinets to store ingredients and dry goods, as well as wine racks and wine-glass holders.

Versatility Requires Planning

Movable islands are available in nearly every style including Contemporary, Country or French Country, Hip or Avant Garde, European Chic, Traditional, and many more.

Island base and frame materials are wood and/or metal, Red Oak, Northern Maple, Beech, Cherry, Birch, Basswood, Stainless or Zinc-plated Steel, and wrought or hammered iron all common choices.

Oak and Stainless Steel are good choices for movable islands because of their inherent strength and stability.

Top materials require a bit of planning on a movable island because a movable island is so versatile throughout the home.

Butcher block serves very well because it is durable, is easy on cutlery when preparing foods or serving, cleans easily, and seems to go with every decor and looks good out on the deck as well.
