Large Kitchen Island - More Like A Short Wall

A large kitchen island is often the key to that sometimes elusive 'triangle' design that arranges the refrigerator, the sink, and the stove into the most efficient workspace.

Large kitchen islands serve to separate open-space rooms commonly found in home design today, and they help direct traffic flow, convert eating and cooking areas to multi-use areas, keep the cook and guests together-but-apart, as well as complement other design ideas.

Large islands are especially useful in kitchens with large floor plans or odd-shaped dimensions or in open-space eating areas in apartments and condominiums.

Dream, But Plan Ahead

Large islands are available in a style to meet nearly every taste including contemporary, hip, traditional and country styles, and their cabinetry and options can often be customized or custom-made.

Working surfaces can be wood block, stainless steel, granite, marble, or synthetic counter top.

The cabinets themselves are often made from oak, cherry, beech, poplar, birch, maple, or other woods and sometimes in combination with glass and/or stainless steel or copper sheathing; some are entirely metal.

Finishes are usually natural or oiled wood, painted color or powder-coat.

Kitchen design experts point to the gravitational pull of a kitchen island both in terms of design and use.

Not only do they provide convenient workspace when cooking, but family and guests are drawn to them very naturally.

Large islands in a kitchen, however, have the advantage of space and can be fitted with bar sinks, deep fryers, serving shelves, storage cabinets and drawers, utensil and towel racks, small refrigerators, wine racks, and beverage service, among other options.

That means some planning is necessary.

Overhead lighting, power outlets, one on each end, at least, plumbing, and traffic clearances are all important considerations when installing a big kitchen island.
