Kitchen Island Furniture - A Lot More Than That

Kitchen island furniture suggests understatement.

The Kitchen island serves many functions in terms of both design and use.

They increase storage and work space making food preparation and cooking easier, but they can also act as a breakfast bar or provide bar service for guests.

No wonder 80% of home buyers think kitchen islands furniture is essential in their kitchens.

Their use isn't all that makes them so desirable, however.

Modern lifestyles often require kitchens to be multi-use areas, and open-space home design means separating eating areas from cooking areas can be problematic.

Kitchen islands are perfect in these and other design situations.

Myriad Choices

As noted, kitchen islands are very popular and their myriad designs and styles reflect that.

Contemporary, Traditional, American Folk and French Country, Avant Garde or Hip, and others are all popular styles.

Designs range from small carts with butcher block tops to large installed  islands with granite tops, drop-leaf cutting boards or breakfast bars, raised storage or serving shelves, bar-sinks, appliances, storage cabinets, refrigeration units, wine racks and many other options.

Kitchen islands are made of a number of materials.

Many are wooden and use Northern Maple, Red Oak, Poplar, Birch, and plantation-grown exotic woods, but others are constructed of stainless steel, much like their commercial-use cousins.

Residential style islands often combine wood with stainless steel.

Finishes on island furniture is natural, oiled, stained, painted--some hand-painted, and, on metal, powder-coat.

Work surfaces and tops are usually hard wood, granite or marble, stainless steel, and a very common and attractive choice, butcher block, which is usually Hardrock Maple fastened end or edge grain to prevent cracking and warping.
