Cheap Kitchen Islands - Can Openers Don't Cost Much Either, But. . .

Cheap kitchen islands may be lower in price, usually less than $500, but not necessarily in quality or value.

Most are small or mobile, which makes them terrifically useful in smaller kitchens, in kitchens with awkward floor plans and traffic patterns, and in open-space kitchens found in apartments and condominiums.

Kitchen design experts point to the gravitational pull of a kitchen island both in terms of design and use.

Not only do they provide convenient workspace when cooking, but family and guests are drawn to them very naturally.

Even a cheap kitchen island is a valuable addition to a kitchens design.

The Cost Is Not Its Value

Most inexpensive islands are either wheeled and small enough to also be used as a cart; many are cart designs. Wheeled kitchen islands can easily be moved into an adjoining room for entertaining or onto a deck for outdoor cooking.

Islands with wheels can be moved to reconfigure multi-use areas or open-space designs.

Work areas can be more efficiently used when more than one cook is in the kitchen.

A cart more easily allows you to move your 'kitchen', so to speak.

Smaller than an island and sometimes fitted with carriage wheels on one end for easy movement over carpeting or over stonework and decks outside, a cart can move as guests move to other rooms.

Many are constructed of weather-resistant materials and can be used outside on the deck or patio, in an RV or on a boat.

Most portable kitchen islands have storage shelves or cabinetry for cooking implements and utensils or for foods and beverages.

Even inexpensive islands and carts may have wine racks or be fitted for bar service or as a breakfast bar with drop-leaf tops.

Cheap or not, islands and carts are available in many styles including contemporary, hip, traditional and country styles.

Most inexpensive models are made of wood with either a natural or painted finish, but some are wrought iron or combinations of wood and stainless steel.

Tops may be butcher block, hard maple, or granite.

Remember, though, that it isn't price that determines the value of a kitchen island.
