Butcher Block Islands - Welcome In The Home

Butcher block islands are a wonderful adaptation of a commercial workhorse, and they make the transition with style.

Butcher blocks - laminated blocks of hard maple, were first developed to serve the meat-cutting industry at the turn of the 20th century.

Nearly indestructible, not prone to cracking or warping that retains moisture and encourages germs, and easy on valuable cutlery and cooking utensils, butcher blocks found a welcome home as tops for residential butcher block island furniture.

Popular Almost Anywhere

Because of their traditional and hardy appearance, butchers blocks seem to fit any style or design of kitchen island.

Rustic, Contemporary, Traditional, American Folk and French Country, Avant Garde or Hip, and other styles are very popular and go very well with the unique block patterns and changing hues of the wood in butcher blocks.

Kitchen islands have much more to them than the top, of course.

Islands with butcher block tops have bases that are made of a variety of woods, Northern Maple, Red Oak, Poplar, Birch, and Liptus, a plantation - grown South American wood, among them.

But more recent designs are made of metals like wrought iron and stainless steel or combinations of metal and wood.

Block islands provide very durable cooking and food preparation areas, to be sure, but features like enclosed cabinets, drawers, and shelves add more storage space, as well.

Many islands with butcher block tops also have drop-leaf eating areas, wine racks and beverage service, refrigeration units, storage bins and book shelves, bar-sinks, serving shelves, and other options.

Wheeled islands and smaller carts with butcher block tops are especially handy.

They can be moved from room to room to follow guests or even outside to help the household chef during a barbecue.
